Places to Visit in and around New Milton
Local Towns
Christchurch
Christchurch Town has existed in one
form or another since the iron age when the area between the river
Avon and the river Stour was used as a trading point and safe
mooring for visiting traders. Throughout history the town has
adapted to suit the era and today as a result has a multitude of
tales to tell and features to see.
Still welcoming visitors this area of coastline remains unknown to
many and a jewel in the crown of those who have the good fortune to
find us. A tremendous sense of community exists between those who
have lived here all their lives and those who have settled here from
other areas.

Highcliffe
Highcliffe
in Dorset - or Highcliffe on Sea to give it its full name.
We've got it
all! Award winning beaches and superb views. Walk in nature
reserves, where wildlife abounds. We even have a cliff top
castle overlooking
the beach, and are only a 5 minute drive to the New Forest.
Highcliffe also has a variety of restaurants, cafes, bars, and a
range of out of the ordinary shops.

Lymington
Lymington on the west bank of the
Lymington River is a port on the Solent, in the New Forest district
of Hampshire, England. It is to the east of the South East Dorset
conurbation, and faces Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight which is
connected to it by a car ferry, operated by Wightlink. The town has
a large tourist industry, based on proximity to the New Forest and
the harbour. It is a major yachting centre with three marinas.
According to the 2001 census the Lymington urban area had a
population of about 14,000.The
town has many shops, catering for tourists and sailing enthusiasts
alike. There is a local market every Saturday, which takes place in
the main High Street. The market is fairly typical for southern
England, selling a selection of cheap general household items, craft
items and a selection of food produce from the local area.

Milford on Sea
The large village of Milford on Sea is
located on the south coast of England in the county of Hampshire.
With a population of approximately 5,000, Milford has a variety of
shops, restaurants and pubs in its high street, which borders the
village green.The village is
scenic in location, protected from development by a surrounding
"green-belt" of land. From the beach in Milford The Needles of the
Isle of Wight are on most days clearly visible.

New Milton & Barton on Sea
New Milton is situated between the
sea and the New Forest, which has recently been designated a
National Park, to the east and north, making it a perfect base for
visiting the surrounding area.
The Town is easily accessible by train, bus or car and is
conveniently situated about half way between Bournemouth and
Southampton. A street market held every Wednesday enhances the Town
centre shopping area, which has two supermarkets, a department
store, a wide variety of other shops, restaurants and pubs.
One mile to the south of the Town centre is Barton-on-Sea, renowned
for its internationally famous fossil beds. Here can be found many
pleasant walks along the cliff top or beach, a 27-hole golf course,
and eating places to suit everyone’s pocket.
Travel a short distance east from the Town and you will enter the
New Forest with its diversity of scenery, flora and fauna, including
the famous ponies roaming free.
New Milton has hotels and bed & breakfast establishments available
for visitors, or, on the outskirts of the Town, there are holiday
parks and camping sites.

since around 800 A.D. The present building was begun in 1094
by Ranulf Flambard and has since been in continuous use as a place
of prayer and pilgrimage. Visitors never fail to be amazed to
find such a beautiful church tucked away in this corner of Dorset,
where it dominates the skyline of the historic town of Christchurch.

Local
Attractions - The Arts
Artsway
Early in the 1990's a group of local artists
were using the old coach house and stables behind the Forest Heath
Hotel as studios. They were interested in developing the site to
include a gallery
and
educational activities. The founding Director, Linda Fredericks,
together with a steering group of interested individuals and
volunteers (and assisted by Hannah Bilton as administrator)
initiated the development of ArtSway as a contemporary visual arts
gallery. The initial steering group was developed into the
Management Board of the ArtSway Trust and a supporting Consultation
committee. With the support of the local authorities (New Forest
District Council and Hampshire County Council) and the regional arts
development agency, Southern Arts, applications were made to the
Foundation for Sport and the Arts and the recently established
Capital scheme at the Arts Council of England funded by National
Lottery.
